The pandemic continues to impact the mobile app ecosystem, according to an annual retrospective released by app intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
Initially, several applications saw a rapid increase in usage, specifically online shopping, entertainment, business, and education.
Although much of the “normal” activities have since been restored, things have not returned to normal in the app stores. Some app categories still have download volume well above pre-pandemic levels, while others have yet to fully recover.
Travel apps naturally took a big hit delivered by COVID, as countries closed borders to tourists. In addition, the increase in the home office scheme led to a lower need for transportation and other applications associated with a daily commute. Combined, the travel and navigation app categories were hit the hardest by the pandemic, down around 40% in April 2020 (pandemic peak) compared to 2019 totals.
Other types of apps were less affected by the daily battles with COVID surges and may instead represent trends that are here to stay. Business apps are a key example. Many companies have adopted the home office as a permanent practice. Overall, in 2021, business app download growth was more than double pre-pandemic levels (+102%).
